• From 2000-2006, Murrieta’s population grew from 44,282 to 92,933, a gain of 48,651 people or 109.9% due largely to new developments (Exhibit 1).
In this period, Southwest Riverside County (census tracts in and around Murrieta, Temecula, Lake Elsinore) grew by 74.0% and Riverside County as a whole by 16.5%. Murrieta’s rapid population growth is part of a relatively new phenomena for Southern California: inland growth due to new residents migrating north from San Diego County along the I-15 freeway. The city’s largest in-crease (32.0%) was in 2003 due to the annexation of the area in and around Murrieta Hot Springs.
• Looking ahead, the population of Southwest Riverside County is expected to reach 434,746 in 2010, up by 55,593 (14.7%) from 2005. It is then expected to reach 568,280 by 2020, up 189,127 from 2005
